Seminole Square Shopping Center Supports Local Organizations This Holiday Season

Released: November 30, 2012

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Great Eastern Management Company today announced an array of holiday activities this season at Seminole Square Shopping Center. Thanks to a generous offer from Giant Food, The Salvation Army will use the space formerly occupied by Giant for its Christmas Distribution Center; a Salvation Army kettle stand and bell ringers will be located near Big Lots; and the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville will once again sell Christmas trees and wreaths in the shopping center’s parking lot.

“As a local company that actively supports our community, we are proud to partner with these two outstanding service organizations,” said David Mitchell, spokesperson for Great Eastern Management Company. “We encourage shoppers to show their holiday spirit at Seminole Square by supporting The Salvation Army and The Kiwanis Club, as well as the merchants of Seminole Square.”

The Salvation Army will use the former Giant store to sort, arrange and distribute gifts through its Angel Tree program, which brings the joy of Christmas to area children who may not otherwise receive gifts. The iconic Salvation Army red kettle and bell ringers will be stationed outside Big Lots daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Christmas Eve.

“We’re celebrating 100 years of Christmas fundraising by The Salvation Army in the Charlottesville area,” said Major Allen Johnson.  “Our 100 years of service has been made possible by donors, volunteers, businesses and caring individuals. The work at The Salvation Army goes on year-round, and this annual fundraising helps support services rendered to those in need in our community.”

Through Dec. 16, The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville will sell fresh-cut Fraser Firs from West Virginia, locally grown and fresh cut White Pine Christmas trees and handmade large and small wreaths to support club service projects that benefit mainly children and youth. The sale will take place in the parking lot in front of Office Depot, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville has been selling Christmas trees for 80 years and we’ve been at Seminole Square for more than two decades,” said Bob Pflugfelder, president of the Kiwanis Club. “Three generations of Charlottesville families have bought their Christmas trees from Kiwanians. They tell us that Kiwanis trees and wreaths are consistently the best buy in town for freshness and beauty.”
